SHAPING THE FUTURE OF SOUTH AFRICA'S AUTOMOTIVE AND ENGINEERING SECTORS

Sedibeng TVET College continues to make a significant impact in the automotive and engineering industries, with over 30 of its alumni employed at Ipelegeng Transport. Among them, nine former students—Kamohelo Sefatsa, Sibusiso Ndlovu, Bafana Makau, Kevin Mngomezulu, Tumelo Moloi, Siphiwe Sehojane, Annie Ramokhoase, Sibusiso Mpembe, and Vutoni Siweya—attribute their career success to the College’s practical learning approach and the strong relationships they built with their lecturers. Their narrative emphasises the importance of industry-relevant education and hands-on training in preparing students for the workforce.

Ipelegeng Transport has provided a stable and promising career path for Sedibeng TVET College graduates, many of whom have secured permanent positions. The alumni express their eagerness to continue developing their skills within the automotive and engineering industries, recognising the vital role that these sectors play in the Vaal area and beyond. “Buses remain an efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly mode of transportation,” they remarked, highlighting how buses offer lower fuel, maintenance, and insurance costs compared to private vehicles, while also reducing carbon emissions.

Looking to the future, these alumni aspire to advance into management positions within Ipelegeng Transport. Their commitment to growth extends beyond their personal development, as they are eager to mentor current students at the College. They encourage current students to remain patient and dedicated to their studies and hope to inspire the next generation of skilled professionals.

Mr. Kabelo Mphahlele, CEO of Ipelegeng Transport, is a passionate advocate for the College and has observed significant advancements in technology within the transport industry. He notes that, in the past, a disconnect existed between industry needs and academic curricula. However, the College has successfully addressed this gap by hiring lecturers with industry experience and expertise. Beyond his role at Ipelegeng Transport, Mr. Mphahlele actively supports students throughout their educational journey by facilitating industry exposure, career immersion opportunities, and real-world learning experiences that bridge the gap between education and employment.

Mr. Mphahlele’s commitment extends to identifying high-potential students for apprenticeship programs under the National Artisan Development Programme, particularly through the Section 13 Apprenticeship System and Section 26D route. These initiatives align with South Africa’s National Development Plan, which aims to produce 30,000 artisans per year by 2030.

Ipelegeng Transport remains committed to the ongoing development of the College’s graduates, offering in-house training programs that include Health & Safety, SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment), and Customer Relations courses, ensuring that alumni stay updated with industry standards. Mr. Mphahlele also takes pride in identifying alumni with entrepreneurial abilities by ensuring that they establish their own successful businesses, demonstrating that the College not only produces a skilled labour force but also fosters future industry leaders and entrepreneurs.

Currently, 12.5% of Ipelegeng Transport’s workforce consists of Sedibeng TVET College alumni, primarily from STEM-related programmes. This piece of data highlights the institution’s role in equipping students with the skills required for the evolving automotive and engineering sectors.

The College’s commitment to practical education and strong industry partnerships continues to yield positive results, as demonstrated by its thriving alumni at Ipelegeng Transport. With a focus on career growth, mentorship, and industry alignment, the College remains a pillar of technical and vocational education, shaping the future of South Africa’s automotive and engineering industries.
